The first is addressed to Kirkudbright and cancelled with the standard Edinburgh Maltese Cross in red, backstamped in Edinburgh 'JU. 2. 1840'. The second is addressed to London and cancelled by a superb strike of the Edinburgh distinctive Maltese Cross in black, backstamped in
a cancellation stamp affecting portions of the signature
