The painting is held within a later frame and signed in the lower right

His father worked as a stationmaster and sometimes Robert would accompany him and draw while sitting in the waiting room

which is why it’s known as the Königspesel (King’s Parlour)

It fits with the style of the Barbizon group of artists who were active between 1830-1870

Another copy is held in the collection at the Met Museum
